This one year project is proposed by Kiyita Family Alliance for Development (KIFAD). It is intended to address, relieve suffering and build the coping capacity of Women Living with HIV/AIDS (WLWHA) and their immediate families in Nansana, Wakiso District  to progressively become self reliant for economic sustainability of their families.

The project seeks to contribute to the increased access to comprehensive HIV/AIDS treatment, care and economic support to Women Living with HIV/AIDS (WLWHA) in Nansana, Wakiso District Uganda. The major activities for the project will be; provision of home based care, counseling, psychosocial support to WLWHA families and other families affected and infected with HIV/AIDS, improving their household incomes to progressively become self reliant for economic sustainability of their families. In addition, to ensure food security and good nutrition among WLWHA so that they can live longer and plan for their future with their families.

The main goal of the project is to contribute to increased access to comprehensive HIV/AIDS treatment, home based care and economic empowerment to WLWHA in Nansana, Wakiso District. Whilst the specific objectives of the project are:

  1. To strengthen the capacity of 30 WLWHA families to progressively become self- reliant and improve the economic sustainability of their families in Nansana, Wakiso District.

The project will directly benefit 30 WLWHA and their families. The project is expected to benefit a total of 630 people including Orphans Vulnerable Children (OVC’s) throughout the project area. Other indirect beneficiaries will be reported on from time to time as they come on board.

This one year project is expected to cost € 3.750. KIFAD will be the main project implementer. The planned activities aim at creating sustainability in a way that they build the economic and survival capacity of WLWHA, their families and as well as the community and KIFAD.

Project Goal

To contribute to increased access to comprehensive HIV/AIDS treatment, home based care and support to 30 WLWHA in Nansana, Wakiso District.

Specific objective

To strengthen the capacity of 30 WLWHA families to progressively become self- reliant and improve the economic sustainability of their families in Nansana, Wakiso District.

Key activities

To strengthen the coping capacity of 30 PLWHA families to progressively become self reliant for economic sustainability of their families.

  • Identify, select and train 30 WLWHA and their caregivers in IGA, business skills and enterprise development.
  • Identify, select and train 30 WLWHA and their caregivers in improved agricultural practices.
  • Conduct nutrition sessions targeting ART clients and their caregivers.
  • Identify, select, and train 30 WLWHA in tailoring skills.
  • Train 30 WLWHA in loan management and saving and revolving schemes

Revisions

We will combine the nutrition sessions with the VCT. Before the arrival of AIC and during the tests, we will inform our clients about the importance of nutrition and a healthy, balanced diet. Furthermore, we will school our clients in basic financial administration during the trainings.

Originally, we had a second objective foreseen in our proposal, namely:To increase access to home based care services and support to 30 WLWHA families in Nansana Parish.” In order to meet the requirements of your organization, we have revised our original funding proposal and found some alternatives for the activities we initially planned to carry out. Our collaboration with Aids Information Center has allowed us to provide health kits and Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) free at charge. Furthermore, we have contacted dr. William of Mildmay Health Center, Entebbe and he indicated to be willing to inform our community about health issues. Our voluntary community workers are now conducting home visits and individual or family counseling. Besides that, we are referring our clients to TASO Mulago, Wakiso Health Center IV and in the future, Mildmay. Our voluntary community workers, will follow those clients up by visiting them at home, in order to verify that they in fact have attended the healthy facility.

Coverage and target population

The target population of the project is 30 families of Women Living with HIV/AIDS (WLWHA) in Nansana, Wakiso District. We intend to implement a rotating system, in which each mould will rotate in a group of three PLWHA families. Since the size of an average household consists of seven people in our community, we therefore expect the project to benefit approximately 630 ( 30 x 3 x 7) people including orphans and vulnerable children (OVC’s) throughout the project area. Other indirect beneficiaries will be reported on from time to time as they come on board. The project beneficiaries will be selected by KIFAD project staff working together with community volunteer HIV/AIDS counselors, local, and religious leaders in the community.

Strategy

Community trainings will be cross cutting and will mainly focus on ensuring that there is a lot of community involvement in the project, strengthen and build the coping capacity of WLWHA to be able to respond to the problems they are facing. These will include training and sensitization workshops, awareness raising meetings by both external and KIFAD staff to increase the community awareness about the importance of treatment, care and support to WLWHA. Information sharing with other organizations will be encouraged through networking, report sharing, exposure visits, mobile counseling,

KIFAD will network and collaborate with other organizations especially those working in the areas of HIV/AIDS Counseling and treatment, care and support. The major ones are TASO Mulago and AIDS Information Centre, Kampala.

A gender-balanced and WLWHA centered approach which is absolutely essential for sustainability of the project will be used in the implementation of this project. It enhances the participation of girls and boys, women and men in such a way that all contributes to and benefit equitably from the project. It takes account of the cultural and social differences between girls and boys, men and women, which includes differences in their needs and interests, knowledge, tasks and roles in society and above all differences in the extent to which they have access to and control over resources.

KIFAD will aim at complementing other existing efforts in HIV/AIDS by focusing on the WLWHA families through strengthening their capacity to become self reliant for economic sustainability of their families and through provision of home based care and psychosocial support to the infected and affected throughout the area.

Strategic partnership:

  1. KIFAD will partner up with the following like minded agencies below during the implementation of this proposed project.
Ministry of Health; for ART related policies, standards and guidelines.
  2. Uganda AIDS Commission (UAC), TASO Mulago and AIDS Information Centre (AIC), Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC),
  3. Uganda Network of AIDS Service Organizations (UNASO), Voluntary Action for Development (VAD) for VCT Services; for technical guidance, backstopping support.
  4. The District Directorate of Health Services; provision of technical support, IEC Materials
  5. Accredited Wakiso District Health Centres for ARVs; clinical management of ARVs, provision of ART information treatment of Opportunistic Infections.
  6. KIFAD will further collaborate with local communities, other CBOs and other agencies that carryout similar work.

Beneficiaries (Community) Participation.

A high degree of community (beneficiaries) participation will be maintained in all project activities. Staff capacity in PRA techniques will be built to ensure continued participation of all beneficiaries. Continuous use of appropriate participatory tools in identification of beneficiaries needs, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation coupled with increased capacity building support will ensure greater ownership and participation.

The project will hold periodical consultative and review meetings (on monthly and quarterly basis) together with the beneficiaries. These are intended to enhance a cumulative process of building trust, increasing transparency and accountability between beneficiaries, project intermediaries and the project as well as increased community participation in decision making, ownership and greater responsibility towards independence and sustainability. Continuous monitoring, evaluation, review and feedback will ensure incorporation of contemporary issues as they arise into the project. Information sharing and review of project progress will be done through the various meetings together with the beneficiaries.

The project will aim at involving communities as full and active partners rather than passive beneficiaries to build a firm basis which allows the beneficiaries to become active in identifying problems and taking action to address their needs. This is an empowering strategy, which will give the beneficiaries the confidence, skills and access to information to transform them from passive recipients into agents of change in their local communities.

The project will incorporate awareness raising on the rights of HIV/AIDS affected people in all project trainings conducted. Increased awareness will eventually lead to reduced vulnerability to HIV/AIDS and will reduce stigma and discrimination against WLWHA and their families and eventually increase the numbers of those seeking for support, counseling.

In working closely with local leadership at all levels in planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation will enhance their capacity to identify and prioritize PLWHA needs, plan effective interventions for sustainable development, monitor and evaluate community in a participatory manner.
